We’re amplifying voices through a number of channels. African women do inspirational work every day. That is why we strive to document their art and work, and provide them with the tools and platforms to tell their own stories.
AWDF USA interprets amplifying African women’s voices as lending visibility to and engaging in dialogue with the creative and intellectual productions of African women.

Social Media Campaigns

Our #WonderWomenWednesday and #FeministFriday posts on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter highlight the everyday extraordinariness of women of the African diaspora: you will find us engaging current events, highlighting women’s achievements in the arts and politics, and sharing insights from both living and ancestor feminist icons.

Events

In March 2018 AWDF USA hosted “Voices of the Diaspora,” a fund- and friend-raiser held in New York City with the purpose of connecting our New York-based network to the narratives of the excellent work being done by AWDF and its grantee partners on the African continent.
The next day, about 20 women participated in the Afri-Women hangout, an intergenerational mentoring and networking space where we facilitated conversations about navigating personal and professional challenges while being a woman of color.
The Afri-Women Hangout was a continuation of the networking and community-building opportunities presented at the 2017 WoMentoring gathering.

Voices of the Diaspora

Voices of the Diaspora, first held in March of 2018, is AWD USA’s conception of a  “fund- and friend-raiser” event held with the purpose of expanding and celebrating our US-based network. As the title suggests, Voices of the Diaspora exemplifies our commitment to amplifying voices by providing in-person methods for connecting our diasporic audience to the narratives of the excellent work being done by AWDF and its grantee partners on the African continent. Voices of the Diaspora will continue into an ongoing series of annual events whose intent will remain consistent even as the shape of the event evolves.

AfriWomen Hangout

On May 16, 2017, during the 61st session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), AWDF USA organized with Moremi Initiative and Women Change Africa to hold a small and informal event called WoMentoring. WoMentoring began with the intention to create intentional, safe and sacred spaces for intimate conversations to happen on an intergenerational level. Within our feminist spaces, we need women mentoring each other to nurture authentic listening, genuine relationships and real solidarity. In 2018, this event evolved to the form it will take moving forward, the Afri-Women hangout, an intergenerational mentoring and networking space where AWDF USA Board Members facilitated conversations about navigating personal and professional challenges while being a woman of color.”
